INCREDIBLE LANDSCAPES AND BEAUTIFUL VILLAGES

Along this route, which covers approximately 117 kilometers, pilgrims encounter a variety of landscapes, charming towns, historical monuments and places of cultural interest. In fact this part of the Camino  runs through the heart of Galicia, between the provinces of Lugo and La Coruña .

And what places are visited during the different stages? Below is a list of the highlights:

Sarria

This is the starting point of our trip and also that of many pilgrims. Although it may not be as well known as other places along the Camino, Sarria has its own charm.

It is a medieval town that was one of the main population centers in the province of Lugo since ancient times.

With a perfectly well-preserved historic case, historic churches and a welcoming atmosphere, it is an ideal place to start the pilgrimage. In this Galician town, monuments stand out such as the tower-fortress of the Marquises of Sarria , the church of Santa Marina, or the incredible church of Barbadelo, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture that reveals the importance of this town in the early medieval period.

Portomarín

This town is the end of the first stage of our tour. Located on the banks of the Miño River, Portomarín is another highlight on the Camino from Sarria to Santiago. Here you will find the imposing Bridge of Portomarín, which dates back to the 12th century and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The city is also home to the Church of San Juan, an impressive Romanesque-Gothic temple built in the 13th century. As a curious fact, it should be noted that the town, including the previous church, was completely moved from its original location in 1960 due to the construction of a large dam.

The Camino de Santiago passes through very beautiful places

Palas de Rey

This charming town in Lugo is famous for being one of the oldest in the Kingdom of Galicia . It is famous for its important architecture of Medieval origin. Among the monuments found in this town, the famous Pambre castle stands out especially. Dating back to the 14th century, it is one of the few Galician castles that survived intact the so-called irmandiña revolts, peasant revolts that occurred in the Middle Ages.

The municipality is also an ideal place to stop and enjoy an authentic Galician meal after a long day of walking. In addition, Palas de Rei has many other historical monuments of interest that are worth visiting, such as the Iglesia de San Tirso, which dates back to the 12th century.

Arzúa

Known as the heart of the French Way in Galicia, Arzúa is famous for its cheese with designation of origin of the same name, which is a true delicacy for lovers of this traditional food. In addition to tasting this delicious local product, pilgrims can visit the Church of Santiago and the Magdalena Chapel, two important places of historical interest in the town, in addition to the numerous manors that the town has, remember that these are the example of a traditional house of the rural aristocracy in the Kingdom of Galicia, before taking a good rest to later continue with the next stage

Monte do Gozo

This is an emblematic place for pilgrims, since from here you get the first view of the Cathedral of Santiago of Compostela. The Monte do Gozo, or “Mount of Joy”, marks the final stretch of the Camino from Sarria to Santiago and from where the pilgrim sees the Compostela city for the first time. Without a doubt a place from which to take incredible photos of the surroundings of the Galician capital.

Santiago de Compostela

Finally the end of the Camino, the majestic city of Santiago de Compostela with its cathedral is the final objective of the pilgrimage. This stunning masterpiece of Romanesque architecture is the site of the veneration of the remains of the Apostle James and has been an important pilgrimage destination for centuries. In addition to visiting the cathedral, pilgrims can explore Santiago’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and immerse themselves in its rich history and culture. In addition to its main temple, the city has thirty other churches of great beauty and numerous monuments of civil architecture that probably make it one of the most beautiful in Spain.
