History and Meaning
The Botafumeiro has a long history dating back to the 13th century. It is believed that it was originally created as a means to dispel bad odors that arose from pilgrims arriving at the cathedral after long days of walking through it Santiago’s way. However, over time, this curious object acquired a deeper symbolic meaning.
In Catholic liturgy, incense is used to represent prayers ascending to heaven, as well as to purify and sanctify sacred space. The Botafumeiro, with its imposing size and oscillating movement, became a spectacular visual representation of this spiritual practice.
That is why for centuries, it has been a central element in the cathedral’s religious ceremonies, including the Pilgrim’s Mass, which is celebrated daily.
Design and Operation
The Botafumeiro is an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship, built in brass and bronze. With a height of approximately 1.50 meters and a weight of about 50 kilograms, it is not difficult to imagine the magnitude of its presence as it swings across the nave of the cathedral.
Its design is elegant and simple, with an inverted bell shape that opens to contain embers and incense.
The botafumeiro is suspended from a hemp rope that passes through a pulley system on the cathedral ceiling. Traditionally, it was moved manually by a team of tiraboleiros, strong and skilled men in charge of making the Botafumeiro swing with precision and grace. Although a motorized mechanism is currently used for its movement, the technique and skill of the tiraboleiros are still appreciated on special occasions.

Experience and Emotion
Witnessing the Botafumeiro in action is an experience that leaves a lasting impression on visitors to the cathedral. When the censer is lit and begins to swing, it fills the nave with a fragrance based on burning incense that creates an atmosphere of mysticism and reverence.
The sound of bells accompanying its movement adds an additional dimension to the experience, transporting viewers to a state of contemplation and devotion.
For many pilgrims who have completed one of the Caminos de Santiago, the view of the Botafumeiro in the cathedral is the culmination of your trip. Seeing this censer in action is a tangible reminder of the importance of their pilgrimage and the prayers they have offered along the way.
It is a moment of deep connection with the divine and with the long tradition of faith that has permeated this place for centuries.
