Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park:

The Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park of Galicia is the only national park in Galicia and one of the most prominent natural destinations in Spain. It consists of four archipelagos: Cíes, Ons, Sálvora, and Cortegada, located in the Rías Baixas. It extends over both land and sea, including beaches, dunes, cliffs, and underwater ecosystems. Access is limited and controlled, especially during the high season. Visitors need permits to prevent tourist overcrowding and to preserve the environment.

Notable birds: Yellow-legged gull (large colony in Cíes), European shag, and migratory seabirds such as shearwaters and gannets.

The best time to visit the park is in spring and autumn for migratory birds and year-round for resident species.

Ría de Ortigueira and Ladrido

The Ría de Ortigueira and Ladrido, located in the province of A Coruña, is one of the most important natural areas in Galicia for birdwatching. This ria is part of the Natura 2000 Network and is a Wetland of International Importance (RAMSAR), thanks to its role as a refuge for waterfowl and migratory birds.

Notable birds: Grey heron, Eurasian curlew, spoonbills, and various species of shorebirds (sandpipers and dunlins).

Best time: Winter, when wintering birds arrive from northern Europe.

Umia-O Grove Intertidal Complex

The Umia-O Grove Intertidal Complex, located in the province of Pontevedra, is one of the most important wetlands in Galicia and is also part of the Natura 2000 Network. This natural area extends between the mouth of the Umia River, the O Grove peninsula and the island of A Toxa, encompassing marshes, sandy areas, and shallow waters rich in biodiversity.

Notable birds: Flamingo, great northern loon, terns, greylag geese, and spoonbills.

Best time: Autumn and winter, during migration and wintering.

Cospeito Lagoon

Cospeito Lagoon, located in the province of Lugo, is one of the most emblematic wetlands in Galicia. This area is a remnant of the ancient Terra Chá Lagoon, which was partially drained in the 20th century, but it still preserves rich biodiversity.

Notable birds: It is a refuge for water birds such as the marsh harrier, common coot, common teal, and various types of ducks. It also hosts species of amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.

Winter and spring are the best seasons, as they coincide with the presence of wintering birds and the breeding activity of many species.

A Limia and the Lagoa de Antela

The Lagoa de Antela, located in the A Limia region (Ourense), was one of the largest freshwater lagoons in Spain until it was drained in the 20th century for agricultural use. Although it no longer exists as the original lagoon, the area preserves restored wetlands and is a place of great ecological interest. The partial recovery of wetlands in A Limia is an example of conservation efforts in Galicia, making it an important space for biodiversity and ornithology.

Notable birds: Currently, the region’s wetlands serve as a refuge for water birds such as the white stork, hen harrier, little egret, and other migratory species. It is also an important habitat for amphibians and small mammals.
