Playa de las Catedrales: What to know
The Beach of the Cathedrals is a true natural monument, and a testament to this is the landscape it reveals when the tide goes out. Being able to enjoy the views from the 30-meter-high buttresses and the perspectives that can be found between its arches is a truly unique experience.
This is a beach that features a natural ledge, known as the so-called “rasa cantábrica,” which takes the form of arches, columns, and vaults, and which is precisely what led to the beach being named Praia das Catedrais.
When visiting this beach and wanting to fully enjoy it, it is recommended to go during low tide, as it is a very narrow area, and otherwise, it may not always be possible to explore and appreciate it.
From there, you can visit other nearby beaches such as Playa da Pasada, Playa das Illas (a cove next to As Catedrais Beach), Os Castros beach – which is perfect for walking at low tide – and the Longara beach, ideal for spending the day with the family.

You may need a reservation to visit it
If you plan to visit this unique place during the summer months, from July 1st to September 30th, and during Easter, you will need to request a permit, which is completely free of charge.
It should be noted that reservations can only be made 30 days or less in advance. Additionally, you can opt for a guided tour through the website, all at no additional cost, but this is only available during the high season. To make the reservation, you need to go to the official website of the Xunta de Galicia and follow the steps provided in this link.
Once you complete these steps, you will receive a confirmation email that you must keep until the day of your visit, as it is essential for entry and must be presented.
Additionally, when making the reservation, you will notice a small box indicating whether there will be high tide (pleamar), which shows the hours of the day when the tide is high, and low tide (bajamar), when the tide is low. In any case, there are monitors in the area who provide information to visitors at all times.

Easy access via different routes
It is a beach that, contrary to what it might seem, has easy access, as well as a paved walkway and informative panels that serve as a guide at all times. Without a doubt, it is a unique spot protected within the Natura 2000 Network and spans about fifteen kilometers of coastline, which also includes the sandy areas of Os Castros and the… port of Rinlo.
To visit this beach, you can take the N-634 road, which connects A Coruña and Santander, and then take the exits towards the coast in the section between San Miguel de Reinante and Rinlo. También se puede acceder, más allá de la opción del coche, en autobús y a pie.
Now that you know more about Playa de las Catedrales, don’t miss the opportunity in 2025 to plan a getaway to this magical and enchanting place.
